Mount Rinjani has an altitude 3726 meters above sea level, is one of the best trekking routes in the world for mountain climbing tours. Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia after Mount Kerinci in Sumatra. Sometimes, this volcano is active and erupt. From a small volcano in the middle of Segara Anak lake, called Baru Jari. Segara Anak lake is a camp site and fishing site for the climbers and local people.
Rain forest vegetation, alpine and savanna built Mount Rinjani National Park. While cantigi and edelweiss will grow up on the rocks above the altitude 2500 meters above sea level. Many types of Indonesian animals inhabit the wild tropical jungle, deserve to be seen and framed.
Itinerary :
Day 0
6 pm
Meeting point at mataram city (airport, bus station, harbor, hotel, etc).
6-9 pm
Drive to Sembalun village, mount Rinjani basecamp.
9 pm
Arrived in the Sembalun village. Sembalun village located in East Lombok. Sasak culture build them. Sasak is the native tribe who inhabited Lombok. In the Sembalun village, climbers will rest in the hut that has been provided by Rinjani National Park before beginning the climb tomorrow morning.
Day 1
7 am
Getting started the climb of mount Rinjani from Sembalun village. We’ll climb comfortably here, because all the equipment and logistics will be carried by porters.
7-10 am
At the beginning of the journey, we’ll walk through the farming area for almost an hour. Mount Rinjani looks majestic in the distance before it is covered by the haze when the time approached noon. Through some dry river, with some of rain water overdraft. Clean water to drink.
Charm of savanna will appear a moment later. The trees stood alone (solitaire). While the green and tall pastures seem refreshing the eyes. We will pass through Post 1, located just in the middle of the savanna. The only shady spot in savanna.
Walking through the sloping savanna are walking through an intense heat. Sometimes, haze will come and we feel comfort in the savanna. Then opened again and the weather gets hot. We will arrive at Post 2 Tengengean after 3 hours way. A shady place with a small river flowing. We’ll take a rest.
10.30-12 am
The journey back along the savanna. We will pass a track beside a stream of clean water. The hills around us. After a while, a journey through the savanna will end. Then, we’re going through the pine forest. We will pass through the ridge, more steep than before. We’ll reach the last river at Post 3 Padabalong. Post 3 Padabalong is a camp site in the valley with a clearly river. Take a lunch here, the porters will cook foods.
1-4.30 pm
After lunch, we will back climb the pine ridge. More steep, more slowly than before. While the fog began to fall and the weather began to cool. Almost 3 hours of climbing and we’ll reach the top of the hill which is the beginning of Plawangan ridge. Vegetation began to rarely. Dominated by cantigi trees that grow clustered or solitary. 30 minutes away from here we’ll get to Plawangan Sembalun camp site.
4.30 pm
Plawangan Sembalun is a comfortable camp site at the the end of Plawangan ridge. Commonly used by climbers for the last camp before attacking the summit next day. Segara Anak lake seen in the distance. Tonight, we’ll take a sleep here in a tent. After dinner at the volcano.
Day 2
2.30 am
We must be wake up early morning before doing summit attack.
3-6 am
The journey to Rinjani summit has been started. Climber enough to bring a heavy jacket and headlamp or torch to walk, no need to carry the load on his back. On first 1 hour, track is increasingly steep, sandy, and more difficult than before. We will arrive at a narrow ridge. Segara Anak lake below us, peak of Rinjani in the distance. No trees here, only edelweiz, cantigi and several species of orchids. We’ll walking on a sloping ridge. Step by step, then take a breath, walking again, slowly but sure. 1 hour below the summit, climber must be patient. While the eastern sky was growing red.
6 am
We have reached the summit of Rinjani. Staring at the sunrise on eastern sky. Rinjani summit has an altitude 3726 meters above sea level. Commonly called Anjani’s peak. Lombok Island looks very small from here. All the beaches that surround Lombok is seen from here. Mount Agung seen on the west side. While in the direction of sunrise, Sumbawa faintly visible. Segara Anak lake seen magnificent, with Mount Barujari become the center of interest.
6.30-8.30 am
A cold air makes us not to stay too long here. We must be to climb down the summit. Descending the summit will be very exciting, because we seem to be surfing on the sand. But awareness must be kept because on either side of us is the abyss.
8.30 am
We arrived back at Plawangan Sembalun camp site. Take a breakfast before going down to Segara Anak lake.
10 am-1 pm
Going down to Segara Anak lake. We will walk along Plawangan Sembalun ridge, then turn left into the lake. Going down the valley making us feel comfort. The view is dominated by cliffs, sometimes covered when the fog coming down. We’ll see several waterfalls in the distance, making the white lines on the green cliffs.
1 pm
We’ll arrive at Segara Anak lake. Spending one more night to sleep here. Segara Anak has an altitude 2000 meters above sea level. Almost every day is always visited by climbers and local people who want to fishing. Fish is our main menu while staying at Segara Anak. Our porter will be cooking that. Day 3
6-9 am
Wake up in the morning, taking the time to visit the hot water springs.
9-12 am
We’ll leaving Segara Anak lake then climb up the hill until Plawangan Senaru ridge. Steep track must be passed, something which is quite heavy at the beginning of this return trip.
12 am-5 pm
We have reached Plawangan Senaru ridge. The highest point of Plawangan Senaru hill. Then going down to the village. Senaru track is different with Sembalun track. We’ll not pass through the savanna here. We’ll across the rain forest jungle, dominated by the big trees. Some huts will we pass through, such as post 3 (Mondokan Malokak), one of the most convenient place to camp.
5 pm
The journey has ended, we have arrived at the village. The car will be pick us up to Mataram city.
